ACRE The city of Acre (or Akko) is one of Israel's most ancient cities. It has always been an important trading port and has been occupied by various peoples over the centuries. Its conquerors include Alexander the Great, the Romans, the Persians, the Crusaders and the Arabs. Napoleon (in 1799), however, did not succeed in capturing the city. Today, the population of 40,000 includes over 9,000 Arabs, most of whom are Muslims. The old city of Acre includes many interesting sites: the impressive fortifications that held Napoleon at bay, Crusader halls, an ancient harbour, mosques, and pictured here, the Khan El-Umdan. This was built during the reign (1775-1804) of Ahmad Jazzar. A "khan" is a type of inn. The tower, however, was added early in the 20th century. Today is serves as a centre of shops for tourists and visitors.
