THE ARAVA The Arava (Desert Plain) is that part of the Great Rift Valley that runs from Eilat to the southern shores of the Dead Sea. It lies between the mountains of Edom (here in the background) which is part of Jordan, and the mountains of the Negev. The border with Jordan runs along the middle of this valley. The tree in the picture is an Acacia tree, which along with the Tamarisk is the main vegetation. The Arava had significance in the past as an important travel route, as it is the only easily travelled stretch of land that links to the Red Sea. It was controlled in the past by the Edomites, Israelites, Nabbatteans and the Romans. Today it still an important route: in Israel a major highway links up to Eilat, and in Jordan, to Aqaba. There are a number of agricultural settlements scattered along the length of the Arava, which rely on spring and bore water.
