THE HULA VALLEY Sitting in the Great Rift Valley, north of Lake Tiberias, is the Hula valley. Once there was a great swamp here. In the years 1951-58 the swamp was drained in a massive engineering project, in order to provide agricultural land, and to eradicate the source of malaria carrying mosquitos. The mountain in the background is Mount Hermon. Most of this mountain is in Syrian hands, but the part that is in Israeli hands is the tallest mountain in Israel, 2,200 metres (6,700 ft) above sea level. It was the scene of bitter fighting in the Yom Kippur war. A ski resort operates there from the settlement of Neve Ativ. |
