THE RAMON CRATER The Ramon crater is the largest of three such geological formations. They are unique to Israel. The term "crater" is misleading - it is not the result of a meteorite impact, it is the result of erosion. It is believed that the crater was formed from a mountain that once stood here. It was built of a layer of hard rock above layers of softer rock. After cracks appeared in the surface the softer rock was washed away in winter rain, and the harder rock on top collapsed into the space that was formed. The crater is 40 km (25 miles) long and 12 km (7.5 miles) across. The town of Mitzpe Ramon sits on the northern edge of the crater. There is a visitor centre which explains the theory of the crater's creation, along with descriptions of the flora and fauna
